Dating back to 1903, this beautiful painting required extensive preparation by its author, John William Waterhouse. Like most of this artist's paintings, this work is now believed to be in a private collection. The work's title indicates that the figure represents Psyche, who appears in several of Waterhouse's other paintings. The composition depicts a young woman sitting quietly alone in a forest. She slowly opens the golden box, adding tension to the image. Psyche, the king's daughter, angers Venus, who sees her as a rival. She instructed her son Cupid to infect Psyche's mind with her love for the outcast, but Cupid fell in love with her and visited her in her room every night.
