Cecilia Gallerani, a seductive young woman from the Milanese court who was a favoured mistress of Ludovico Sforza, the married Duke of Milan, is depicted in the painting The Lady With an Ermine. Duke was known as "the white ermine" and served as da Vinci's patron and supporter for 18 years. Since Sforza could not pose with his mistress in this love letter image, Da Vinci substituted an animal to represent his unwavering devotion to Gallerani. At the same time, the ermine also conceals Gallerani's pregnancy.
