At the time, the picture was not universally praised. Michelangelo was accused of immorality and obscenity for depicting sacred figures naked with exposed genitals. The genitalia in the fresco was afterwards covered by the artist Daniele da Volterra, known in history as "Il Braghettone" ("the breeches-painter"). Michelangelo portrays himself as Saint. After he has been flayed in the artwork (skinned alive, Bartholomew), reflects Michelangelo's disdain at being commissioned to paint the Last Judgement.
