With two Romanesque chapels on either side, it was constructed in the early Gothic style in the thirteenth century. The chapel appears to be about to lift itself off the ground in Van Gogh's painting. The church seems to be held to the ground by the two walkways. Van Gogh only depicted the church in its whole once, in The Church at Auvers. He portrays it as a lonely place with dark windows reflecting the pitch-black sky and no internal light.
