Van Gogh painted four flamboyant bouquets of spring flowers in May 1890, just before he checked himself out of the Saint-Rémy asylum. These were the only ambitious still lifes he had attempted during his year-long stay: two of irises and two of roses, in contrasting colour schemes and formats. In the Irises in the Museum, he used fugitive red paints to create a "pink background" that subsequently faded to achieve a "harmonious and delicate" impression. Roses (1993.400.5), another piece from this series, is displayed in the adjacent gallery. Until her passing in 1907, the artist's mother owned both.
