Raphael, an Italian master of the High Renaissance, completed The Transfiguration as his final work. The artwork was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, who later rose to become Pope Clement VII (in office: 1523–1534). It was intended as an altarpiece for France's Narbonne Cathedral, and Raphael worked on it in the years before his death in 1520. The work serves as both a representation of Raphael's growth as an artist and the pinnacle of his artistic career. Unusually for a representation of Jesus' Transfiguration in Christian art, the topic is mixed with the scene from the Gospels that comes after it (the curing of a demon-possessed lad) in the painting's lower third. The piece is currently on display at the Vatican City Pinacoteca.
