J. M. W. Turner painted "The Grand Canal, Venice" during his second trip to Venice, most likely in 1833. To capture a landscape through the prism of his Romantic sensibility, Turner painted several views of the city. Turner was a genius at capturing nature in his paintings with vivid color and dramatic light. The foundations of the Venice palaces are famously depicted in this artwork as they subtly reflect into the canal waters. One of his "more pleasing works" was warmly received when it was displayed at the Royal Academy in 1835.
