Leonardo da Vinci had intended to paint The Battle of Anghiari (1505), which is shown in the Salone dei Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred) at Florence's Palazzo Vecchio. The Battle of Anghiari in 1440 would have been the setting for its main scene, which would have seen four warriors riding ferocious war horses engaged in combat to control a standard. In 1440, the troops of Milan and the Italian League were involved in the action at the Battle of Anghiari. The Republic of Florence served as the Italian League's leader during the Lombardy Wars. The Florentines won the conflict and established their dominance over central Italy.
