For his etched series Rivers of England, Turner created Shields on the River Tyne along with one of Newcastle. In these, he honors the Tyne and its function in the trade and transportation of the coal that powered Britain's steam age. The "chief emporium of the coal trade" was Newcastle. 'Keelmen' at Shields worked nonstop, filling colliers with coal on raised iron rails known as 'hurries,' or rails. In actuality, keelmen suffered due to British technological advancement as their profession was mechanized.
