In 1889, while incarcerated in the Saint-Remy asylum, Van Gogh received a letter from his friend Emile Bernard outlining his brand-new work, Christ in the Garden of Olives. As an alternative to the imagined olive orchard of Christ's Suffering, he said he would prefer to paint the olive trees right outside his window. Although in his agony, Van Gogh's thoughts frequently took him back to the holy ideals of his boyhood, he believed that reality was the sole source of strength.
